Sciatica Relief from our Kennesaw Chiropractor
Sciatica is one of the most common causes of back pain and the most common cause of lower back pain. People with sciatica can experience an array of persistent symptoms that can be severe enough to interfere with daily activities. Without prompt medical care, sciatica can progress and cause weakness, loss of coordination and muscle atrophy. The good news is, the skilled chiropractors at Discover Chiropractic & Rehabilitation know just what to do to help patients relieve sciatica symptoms and lead healthier, more comfortable lives.
What is Sciatica?
Sciatica is a condition that develops when the sciatic nerve is irritated or compressed. The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body, exiting the spine in the lower back (the lumbar spine) before splitting into two branches, one of which extends down each leg.
Several issues can cause or contribute to sciatica, but the most common causes are disc-related problems like slipped discs or herniated discs. The discs are firm, spongy structures located between each pair of spine bones (vertebrae). Each disc is composed of a tough outer fibrous shell called the annulus fibrosus and a gel-like interior called the nucleus pulposus.
Sometimes, a disc can shift out of its normal position and protrude beyond the edges of the vertebrae, pressing against the sciatic nerve as it exits the spine. In more severe cases, a herniated disc can rupture, leaking some of its gel which can cause additional irritation.
Repetitive lifting, long periods of sitting or standing, obesity and pregnancy all increase the risk of developing sciatica.
What Symptoms Does Sciatica Cause?
Sciatica causes symptoms like pain and aching in the lower back as well as symptoms that can radiate all along the nerve pathway, through the buttocks and legs. Radiating symptoms can range from mild to severe, and can include aching, electricity-like pains, numbness, tingling, pins-and-needles sensations and muscle weakness. Symptoms often are severe enough to interfere with sleep or with activities like sitting at work.
How Does a Chiropractor Treat Sciatica?
Treatment of sciatica usually begins with a spinal adjustment to help gently coax the discs back into their normal positions and to bring the vertebrae back into alignment, relieving nerve compression and irritation. A skilled chiropractor will also recommend therapeutic exercises and stretching to promote circulation, reduce inflammation and improve lower back strength for better healing and to prevent sciatica from recurring.
